The National Peace Council (NPC) has called on Ghanaians to remain calm and exercise restraint amid growing political tensions following the recent arrests of some political actors over comments deemed to have violated the laws of the country.
In a press release issued on May 20, 2026, the Council expressed deep concern over the increasing tensions and emphasized the need for moderation, tolerance, and respect for the rule of law.
“The National Peace Council is deeply concerned about the rising political tensions following recent arrests of some political actors based on comments they allegedly made,” the statement said.
The Council reminded citizens that adherence to due process, constitutional rights, and the rule of law remain essential pillars of Ghana’s democracy. It urged all actors in the political and media space to avoid inflammatory remarks and actions that could incite violence or threaten national stability.
The NPC also appealed to security and judicial institutions to carry out their duties with impartiality, transparency, and professionalism while safeguarding the rights and freedoms of citizens.
Additionally, the Council cautioned political commentators both within Ghana and abroad to be mindful of their public utterances and their potential impact on national cohesion.
Reaffirming its commitment to peacebuilding, the NPC announced plans to convene a meeting with political party leaders in the coming days as part of efforts to dialogue and prevent further escalation of tensions.
The statement was issued by the Public Relations Unit of the National Peace Council.
