‎In a rousing address to a throng of party faithful at a packed hall in Tema Central, National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Chairman Johnson Asiedu‑Nketia of his nationwide “Thank‑You Tour” to urge party members to rally behind President

‎The “Thank‑You Tour,” launched in late 2025 to recognize volunteers and grassroots workers who helped the NDC secure a decisive parliamentary majority in the last general election, shifted mid‑speech into a call for collective discipline and party cohesion.

‎“Over twenty of our brothers and sisters vied for the MCE positions when the nod was open,” Asiedu‑Nketia said, pointing to a banner that listed the newly confirmed appointees. “Only one can be chosen for each district, and once that person is appointed, it is our duty and collective responsibility to stand behind them, to support them, and to ensure a smooth administration.”

‎He warned that any lingering factionalism could jeopardise the NDC’s broader agenda and erode the party’s grip on power. “If we allow division now, we risk the very progress President Mahama’s administration has achieved. By backing the appointed MMDCEs, we not only guarantee effective governance at the district level, we also secure a longer tenure for the NDC in national government,” he added.

‎According to the party’s internal vetting committee, the competition for the District Chief Executive (DCE) slot in the Tema Metropolitan District alone attracted more than 20 aspirants. The committee carried out a “rigorous” screening that included written applications, face‑to‑face interviews, background checks and consultations with local stakeholders such as traditional authorities, civil society groups and business chambers.

‎From the initial pool, six candidates were shortlisted for final consideration. After further deliberations and a recommendation to the president, a single name was selected and forwarded for presidential approval. The process, Asiedu‑Nketia noted, reflects the NDC’s commitment to merit‑based appointments while balancing regional representation.

‎The chairman emphasized that gratitude alone does not define the tour’s purpose. “The thank‑you tour is not just about gratitude; it is about accountability. We will keep listening, we will keep learning, and we will keep delivering. Together, we will make sure that the Mahama administration leaves a lasting legacy for all Ghanaians,” he declared to an enthusiastic crowd that responded with sustained applause.

‎‎President Mahama’s administration, now in its second full term, has focused on expanding infrastructure, reviving the agricultural sector and consolidating social safety nets. The appointment of MMDCEs—who serve as the central government’s representatives at the district level forms a critical component of that agenda, ensuring that national policies are implemented effectively across Ghana’s 260 districts.

‎‎Party insiders say the chairman’s plea for unity comes amid murmurs of dissent from a few aspirants who felt marginalized during the vetting process. While no formal protests have emerged, analysts suggest that any open rift could be leveraged by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the next local government elections slated for 2027.

‎As the “Thank‑You Tour” continues its circuit through Ghana’s regions, Asiedu‑Nketia is expected to repeat his message of solidarity and collective responsibility in subsequent rallies, including upcoming stops in the Ashanti and Northern Regions. Party officials hope that the tour will cement grassroots enthusiasm and mitigate any lingering factionalism before the 2026 mid‑term local government elections.

‎‎The NDC’s ability to maintain internal cohesion while delivering on its development promises will be a litmus test for President Mahama’s administration as it seeks to cement its legacy and position the party for future national contests.
