Canada has announced a transformative direct air link with Ghana, a move set to turbocharge tourism, business, and cultural exchanges between the two nations, starting in June 2026.
This was disclosed by the High Commissioner of Canada to Ghana, Her Excellency Myriam Montrat, during a reception with the media on Wednesday, 26 November 2025.
“Air Transat, one of Canada’s major airlines, announced the launch of a new non-stop route between Toronto and Accra,” Montrat stated. The seasonal service will offer two weekly flights from 17 June to 22 October 2026, directly serving the surge in travel for the FIFA World Cup 2026, which Canada is co-hosting with the United States and Mexico.
The High Commissioner emphasised that this is “just the beginning,” stating that the Air Transport Agreement signed between the two countries in March 2025 allows for up to 14 weekly passenger and 10 weekly cargo flights by multiple carriers.
This physical bridge across the Atlantic underscores a deepening economic and strategic relationship, which Montrat detailed under Canada’s new Africa Strategy, A Partnership for Prosperity and Shared Security.
On trade and investment, the High Commissioner revealed that Ghana is Canada’s fifth-largest trading partner in Sub-Saharan Africa, with bilateral trade hitting US$483 million in 2024. Canadian mining assets in Ghana are valued at over US$1.1 billion, creating a “powerful basis for continued collaboration” in critical minerals.
“Through our Trade Commissioner Service, we help Canadian and Ghanaian businesses connect in sectors such as clean technology, infrastructure, and agri-food,” Montrat said, adding that Canada is advocating for policies that promote a more investment-friendly environment in Ghana.
In the realm of security cooperation, a key pillar of the new strategy, Montrat highlighted the unique collaboration with the Ghana Armed Forces through the Elsie Initiative, which advances the participation of women in UN peace operations.
She also pointed to long-standing military training programmes and border security cooperation that “supports Ghana’s role as an anchor of stability in a region facing complex security threats.”
The address painted a picture of a mature, multi-faceted partnership, moving beyond traditional aid to a relationship fuelled by trade, investment, security, and now, direct air connectivity that will bring Canadian and Ghanaian citizens closer than ever before.
