The Government of Ghana has strongly condemned the coup d’état executed by elements of the military in the Republic of Guinea-Bissau. This unconstitutional seizure of power, according to a formal statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, represents a direct assault on democratic governance and a disruption of the electoral process following the peaceful presidential and legislative elections held on 23rd November, 2025.
The Government through the Ministry expressed grave concern regarding this attempt to subvert the will of the Bissau-Guinean people, asserting that it has dangerously derailed the nation’s democratic trajectory and obstructed the anticipated announcement of election results, which was scheduled for 27th November, 2025.
Ghana therefore called for the immediate restoration of constitutional order and urged all actors to respect the sanctity of the democratic process. In the press release , the Government stated that grievances arising from the elections must be addressed exclusively through peaceful, transparent, and legally recognized mechanisms, not through force.
Furthermore, the Nation demanded that the safety and fundamental rights of all citizens and foreign nationals be rigorously safeguarded, emphasising on the protection of officials within the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission currently deployed in Guinea-Bissau and insists that their safety and secure passage must be guaranteed without delay.
Ghana has also appealed to the people of Guinea-Bissau to remain calm, exercise maximum restraint, and avoid actions that may escalate tensions. The Government reaffirms its full support for ECOWAS and the African Union in their coordinated response to this crisis, in strict adherence to regional and continental protocols on democracy, good governance, and constitutional rule.
