Ghana and Russia have signed visa waiver agreement for holders of Diplomatic and Service Passports. This took place on Monday, 17th August, 2026 at the start of three-day official visit to Russia by Hon. Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa, at the invitation of his Russian counterpart, H.E. Sergey Lavrov.

This agreement is the first of its kind between Ghana and Russia since the two countries established formal bilateral relations on 14th January, 1958. This is the first step in opening negotiations for enhanced privileges for all categories of travellers, as the two countries continue to enhance trade, investment and people to people exchange.

During the bilateral talks, the two Ministers pledged their desire to see this official visit creating an opportunity for discussions on broader areas of strategic importance between Ghana and Russia, including educational exchanges, cooperation in energy, agriculture, security and defence, minerals exploration, amongst others.

Speaking at a press briefing Hon. Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa expressed government’s appreciation for Russia’s cooperation and support towards Ghana’s drive for industrialization and job creation.
