The vice-presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof.Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has sharply criticized the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) for what she describes as a lack of solutions to the ongoing crises associated with the double-track secondary education system.
Speaking at Gbiniyiri in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba constituency of the Savannah Region, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang expressed concerns over Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum’s recent remarks made during a meeting with clergy members.
Dr. Adutwum had cautioned against the immediate abolition of the double-track system, arguing that such a decision could compromise the educational future of many students.
His comment comes in light of the NDC’s pledge to phase out the double track system if they win the upcoming 2024 general elections.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang refuted the minister’s claims, asking how the abolition of the double track could adversely impact students’ futures.
She asserted that the Minister’s warnings only further illustrate the government’s inability to address the mounting challenges facing the system.
The former Education Minister stated that the NDC has formulated strategic interventions to enhance educational infrastructure, which includes expanding school facilities to better accommodate students.
She drew on her party’s track record, recalling that the previous NDC government successfully eliminated the shift system at the basic school level and vowed to replicate that success to abolish the double track system in secondary education.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang was sad about the deteriorating state of the educational sector under the current Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration, saying that it has led to the system’s decline.
She assured citizens that the NDC has concrete plans to rectify the issues exacerbated by the current government.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang urged voters to support NDC presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama and the party’s parliamentary candidates.
“Together, we can restore hope to our secondary education system,” she said.
