Yaw Buaben Asamoa, a prominent figure in the Movement for Change and former Director of Communication for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has raised serious questions about the recent arrest of his colleague, Hopeson Adorye. The arrest, which took place on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, was in connection with Adorye’s comments about using dynamite to intimidate non-Ghanaians from voting in the Volta Region during the 2016 election.
In an exclusive interview with Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Thursday, May 23, 2024, Buaben Asamoa, who is also serving as Adorye’s legal counsel, made startling revelations about the case. According to him, Adorye had publicly confessed to his actions in the past when he was a member of the NPP, but was never subjected to arrest or prosecution.
Buaben Asamoa pointed out that Adorye had previously informed President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and other party leaders about his actions and was even commended for it. “If you listen to the foundational evidential tape, Hopeson is heard telling the people he was speaking to that he had informed then-candidate, now President Akufo-Addo, about this back in 2016. So, before assuming office, he (Akufo-Addo) was aware of it if we are to believe Hopeson,” Buaben Asamoa explained.
The former NPP communicator director further emphasized the apparent double standards in Adorye’s treatment, stating, “For the past eight years, he has made these claims elsewhere, but because he was a prominent figure within the NPP government, no one deemed it necessary to investigate those claims.”
Buaben Asamoa went on to suggest that Adorye’s current association with the Movement for Change has led to his being labeled as a saboteur, treasonous, and a threat to national security. He argued that the change in circumstances has caused discontent among some individuals who are unhappy with Adorye’s continued claims and seek to silence him.
The arrest, which resulted in Adorye being charged with the Publication of False News and granted bail of GH₵20,000 with two sureties, has raised eyebrows among political observers. The allegations made by Buaben Asamoa, if substantiated, could have significant implications for the NPP and the government’s handling of the case.
As the story continues to unfold, Ghanaians are closely watching to see how the authorities will address these explosive claims and ensure that justice is served impartially. The revelations made by Yaw Buaben Asamoa have added a new layer of complexity to an already controversial case, and the public demands answers and accountability from those in power.
The Hopeson Adorye case has the potential to shake the very foundations of the NPP and the government, as it raises questions about the party’s knowledge and potential complicity in the alleged actions. As the nation awaits further developments, it is clear that this political scandal will have far-reaching consequences for all those involved.
