Chairman of Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, Alfred Oko Vanderpuye, has lauded the government for its swift and proactive intervention in evacuating Ghanaian citizens from South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks targeting foreign African nationals.
In a statement issued on May 29, the Ablekuma South Member of Parliament expressed concern over reports of violence, intimidation, and harassment directed at African migrants in parts of South Africa, noting that a number of Ghanaians had been affected by the incidents.
Mr. Vanderpuye praised the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for its decisive leadership in coordinating the evacuation exercise, describing the government’s response as timely and compassionate. He also commended Ghana’s Ambassador to South Africa and officials of the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria for their dedication and professionalism in facilitating the operation.
“I am encouraged by the strong assurance given by Government that no Ghanaian citizen will be abandoned in moments of distress, regardless of where they may find themselves across the globe. This assurance reflects the true spirit of responsible governance and national solidarity,” he stated.
According to the Committee Chairman, the intervention underscores the government’s commitment to safeguarding the welfare and security of its citizens beyond the country’s borders. He further highlighted the provision of emergency travel documents, consular support, and reintegration assistance for returning nationals as evidence of the state’s determination to protect the dignity and well-being of its people.
Mr. Vanderpuye assured the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Committee’s full support in its efforts to protect Ghanaians abroad and strengthen the country’s diplomatic engagements. He also expressed Parliament’s solidarity with victims of the attacks and extended condolences to families affected by the violence.
Addressing the broader challenge of xenophobia on the continent, the lawmaker called on African leaders, the African Union, and other stakeholders to intensify efforts aimed at promoting tolerance, peaceful coexistence, and respect for human rights.
“Africa’s strength lies in unity, brotherhood and mutual respect. There is no place for xenophobia, intolerance and violence against fellow Africans anywhere on the continent,” he stressed.
He also urged Ghanaians residing in South Africa to remain law-abiding, stay in close contact with Ghana’s diplomatic mission, and adhere strictly to safety directives issued by relevant authorities.
The evacuation follows renewed concerns over xenophobic violence in South Africa, where foreign nationals have periodically faced hostility from groups who accuse migrants of taking jobs and economic opportunities from local citizens.
