President John Dramani Mahama is urging the African Union (AU) to undergo a critical evaluation of its progress and adopt transformative strategies to address the dynamic needs of the African continent.
Speaking at a two-day retreat in Nairobi, Kenya, he emphasized the need for self-reflection and decisive action to tackle Africa’s pressing issues.
Mahama praised the AU’s reform agenda as a necessary step towards reshaping the continent’s future, highlighting its potential to transform the AU into a more efficient, financially independent, and effective institution.
He acknowledged the AU’s achievements in economic integration and peacebuilding but stressed the need for bold reforms to address challenges such as youth unemployment, food insecurity, climate change, governance deficits, and regional conflicts.
To achieve this, Mahama proposed several key reforms, including:
- Streamlining Decision-Making Processes: Ensuring timely and results-oriented decision-making to address the evolving needs of the continent.
- Eliminating Inefficiencies: Clarifying roles within the organization and eliminating redundancies to establish a more agile institution.
- Prioritizing Efficiency, Transparency, and Accountability: Ensuring that every resource is used to benefit the people of Africa and adopting mechanisms that prioritize accountability, transparency, and value for money.
The retreat aimed to develop actionable plans to make Africa more self-reliant and improve the living standards of its citizens.
Mahama’s call for reform and self-reflection is a significant step towards achieving this goal.
