President and Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), H.E. John Dramani Mahama, has embarked on a Thank You Tour of the North East Region to express his appreciation to the people for their overwhelming support in the 2024 Presidential Election.
Addressing a large gathering in Nalerigu, President Mahama extended his heartfelt gratitude to the chiefs, youth, and people of the region, acknowledging their pivotal role in securing his victory. He reaffirmed his commitment to addressing the developmental needs of the region and outlined several critical issues that his next administration would prioritize.
Key Highlights of President Mahama’s Speech:
Poor Power Supply:
President Mahama decried the persistent irregular power supply affecting homes and businesses in the region. He pledged to prioritize energy sector reforms and expand access to reliable electricity in underserved communities.
Bad Road Network – Chereponi:
He highlighted the deplorable state of roads in the region, particularly in Chereponi, which has hindered movement and economic activity. The President assured residents that his government would work to upgrade and asphalt key road networks.
Education and Youth Empowerment:
Emphasizing the role of education in national development, Mr. Mahama committed to expanding access to quality education and implementing programs that empower young people with skills and opportunities.
Education Infrastructure:
The President stressed the urgent need to improve educational infrastructure across the North East Region. He noted that better classrooms, teaching materials, and support services are essential to enhancing teaching and learning outcomes.
Nursing Training College:
President Mahama promised to establish a Nursing Training College in the region to train more health professionals locally and reduce the shortage of nurses across the northern belt.
Higher Education – Teacher Training College:
He also proposed the establishment of a Teacher Training College to raise the standard of basic education and offer career advancement to youth interested in the teaching profession.
Healthcare Delivery – Regional Hospital for Nalerigu:
On healthcare, he acknowledged the challenges faced by health facilities in the region and called for the construction of a Regional Hospital in Nalerigu to serve as a major referral center and improve access to quality healthcare.
Heritage and Chieftaincy:
President Mahama underscored the importance of preserving cultural heritage and strengthening the chieftaincy institution. He pledged to resource relevant agencies to promote traditional governance and heritage conservation.
Security and Peace in Bawku:
On national security, he expressed deep concern over the protracted Bawku conflict and commended the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for leading peace efforts. He reiterated his support for a lasting resolution to the conflict and the restoration of peace and development in the area.
President Mahama concluded his address by reaffirming his resolve to build a united, prosperous, and inclusive Ghana where every region enjoys its fair share of development.
