President John Dramani Mahama has met with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) to address the emerging energy crisis in Ghana.
The meeting aimed to discuss measures to increase power generation and revenue mobilization, tackling the debt accumulation in the energy sector.
Mahama highlighted that the energy sector is burdened with a debt of over $2.5 billion, which poses a significant challenge to the country’s economic stability.
He emphasized the need for alternative revenue mobilization and generation to address this crisis.
The President assured the IPPs that his administration would work with them to address the challenges in the power sector.
He identified the value chain as a critical area, starting from downstream to upstream, ensuring the availability of gas to reduce generation costs.
Other key areas of focus include:
- Ensuring Efficiency: Passing on benefits to Ghanaians and promoting effectiveness and efficiency at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
- Private Sector Participation: Introducing private sector participation to make ECG more competitive and viable.
- Reforming Governance: Reforming the governance system at ECG to improve efficiency.
