President John Dramani Mahama will on December 14, 2025, attend the 68th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government in Abuja, Nigeria.
The high-level summit, scheduled to take place at the Presidential Villa, will bring together leaders of the West African sub-region for deliberations on the future of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) amid evolving political, security, and economic challenges.
A key highlight of the meeting will be a Special Debate on the Future of the Community, during which heads of state and government are expected to reflect on the direction, relevance, and reforms of ECOWAS in a rapidly changing regional and global context.
President Mahama is expected to participate in a closed-door session focusing on the strategic orientation of the Community, with particular emphasis on political stability, regional security, and deeper economic integration across member states.
The agenda for the Ordinary Session includes several critical items, notably:
Pronouncements on the future of the ECOWAS Community
Presentation of the 2025 Annual Report on the State of the Community
Reports on regional security developments, ongoing mediation efforts, and the political transition process in Guinea
A review of the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme (ETLS), aimed at strengthening intra-regional trade
The summit will conclude with the adoption of a final communiqué outlining key decisions and policy directions agreed upon by leaders. This will be followed by a joint press conference addressed by ECOWAS officials.
President Mahama’s participation underscores Ghana’s continued commitment to regional integration, democratic governance, peace, and collective prosperity within the ECOWAS sub-region.
