President John Dramani Mahama will on Sunday, March 1, 2026, depart Accra for Arusha, Tanzania, to participate in the opening of the 2026 judicial year of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, where he will serve as Special Guest of Honour.
The solemn ceremony, scheduled for Monday, will also launch the commemoration of the Court’s 20th anniversary under the theme “20 Years of Service in Protecting Human and Peoples’ Rights in Africa.”
According to a statement signed by the Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu (MP), the invitation marks a historic milestone for Ghana.
“This is the first time a sitting President of the Republic of Ghana has been invited to address the African Union Court,” the statement said.
President Mahama is expected to deliver a keynote address reflecting on the Court’s two decades of contribution to the protection of human and peoples’ rights across the African continent.
While in Arusha, the President will also hold bilateral talks with Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, aimed at deepening diplomatic relations and cooperation between Ghana and Tanzania.
“The visit will further strengthen the cordial relations between Ghana and Tanzania, and explore opportunities for enhanced cooperation at both bilateral and continental levels,” the statement added.
President Mahama is expected to return to Accra after the opening ceremony on Monday. In line with Article 60(8) of the Constitution, the Vice President will act as President during his absence.
