President John Dramani Mahama has publicly reaffirmed his steadfast dedication to the enduring legacy of the late President John Evans Atta Mills, lauding him as a paramount symbol of peace, justice, and humility in Ghana’s political narrative.
Speaking at the 13th annual wreath-laying ceremony at Asomdwe Park in Accra, President Mahama paid tribute to the former leader, highlighting his unwavering moral compass and dignified approach to governance.
The commemorative event brought together a diverse assembly of party loyalists, family members, esteemed dignitaries, and well-wishers, all gathered to reflect on the impactful life and contributions of Professor Mills, who passed away in office on July 24, 2012.
President Mahama emphasized that power never altered Professor Mills’ fundamental character. “There was no politics of insults under Professor Mills. He governed with discipline, respect, and a sincere desire to unite this country,” President Mahama stated, underscoring Professor Mills’ consistent nature as a man of peace who led the nation with profound moral conviction.
He urged Ghanaians to embrace and perpetuate the core values championed by Professor Mills: humility, justice, and accountability. He underscored that these ideals are not merely historical recollections but essential instruments vital for Ghana’s continued advancement.
President Mahama stated that his “Reset Agenda” is firmly anchored in the foundational principles of Professor Mills’ “Better Ghana Agenda,” which prioritized inclusivity, national development, and social cohesion.
“I am following Professor Mills’ leadership with my Reset Agenda, in line with his Better Ghana vision,” he declared, solidifying the continuity of their shared vision.
He further implored the nation’s youth and political leadership to reject the escalating trend of insults and intolerance pervading Ghana’s democratic landscape. He encouraged all citizens to adopt peace and justice as guiding tenets for national progress.
The ceremony concluded with representatives from the government, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), family members, and various organizations laying wreaths in solemn remembrance of the late President.
John Evans Atta Mills is not only celebrated as a distinguished academic and statesman but also revered as a humble servant leader whose profound values continue to resonate and inspire generations.
