The Toll Workers Association of Ghana has spoken out against Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s idea to bring back road tolls. They say it’s just a way to get votes from them.
In 2022, Ghana got rid of road tolls to help ease traffic jams on big roads. During a visit to the Volta Region, the Vice President, who is also the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, suggested bringing back a wider tolling system to raise money for building infrastructure.
At a meeting with religious leaders in the Volta Region at the beginning of his tour, Dr. Bawumia talked about people’s worries about the bad state of the roads. He said the Government didn’t have enough money for infrastructure projects and that creative ways, like road tolls, could be a solution.
Dr. Bawumia also said that the Government should rethink how it pays for roads and that the private sector could add to the money from road tolls to provide relief.
But in an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Friday, Edward Duncan, the General Secretary of the Toll Workers Association of Ghana, said, “…This thing that his excellency is telling us is just to get votes from us and our loved ones and sympathizers because we are about 800 workers, former toll booth workers.”
“We have families, we have friends. We have people that we can influence, we have people that depend on us,” he added.
