Tortured journalists: National Security, police on “fishing expedition” – Lawyer

One of the lawyers for the two Modern Ghana journalists that were detained and allegedly tortured by the National Security, Samson Lardi Ayenini has accused the police and National Security of an attempt to manufacture charges against his clients.

The National Security in a statement released on July 1, 2019 indicated that the two gentlemen were detained for engaging in cyber crime.

Samson Lardi Ayenini however says the charge of cyber crime is an afterthought.

He accused the National Security of embarking on a “fishing expedition” to find offenses against his client.

His concern comes after it emerged that the police are questioning a Peace FM editor about his connections with one of the “tortured” journalists over access to an email address.

Speaking in an interview with Accra based Citi FM, Samson Lardi Ayenini said his clients were never questioned about the supposed cyber crime charges during their time in National Security detention.

According to him, the questioning over the period was limited to two publications made by the website and their connection to the source of these articles, one Constance Leaving.

Samson Lardi Ayenini believes the questioning of the Peace FM editor is part of attempts to dig for evidence to substantiate the allegation of cyber crime against his clients.

He said the National Security manufactured the charge of cyber crime as a justification for the abusive detention of his clients.
