The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 39-year-old man in connection with the murder of a Level 200 student of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), whose body was recently discovered at Hutchland Beach in Cape Coast.
The suspect, identified as Michael Mensah, was apprehended on Monday, June 15, 2026, at approximately 7:15 p.m. by the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team at the Pedu Lorry Station following what authorities described as sustained intelligence-led operations.
According to police, preliminary investigations have revealed that on June 11, 2026, at about 6:48 p.m., the suspect picked up the deceased, Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, from Ayensu Plaza within the university’s hostel enclave.
Investigators say Mensah, who reportedly claims to be a teacher but also works as a driver, subsequently transported the student to Hutchland Beach, where she was allegedly last seen alive.
The arrest comes days after the body of the 22-year-old student was discovered at the beach under circumstances that have shocked the university community and residents of Cape Coast.
Police sources disclosed that one of the deceased’s roommates informed investigators that Innocentia had called to say she was going out to meet an acquaintance on the day she disappeared. She reportedly left her room dressed casually but failed to return, raising concerns among friends and relatives who later reported her missing.
Following the discovery of her body, police launched an intensive investigation that led to the identification and subsequent arrest of the suspect.
The Ghana Police Service has indicated that investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the student’s death. Authorities have assured the public that every effort is being made to uncover the truth and ensure justice is served.
Michael Mensah remains in police custody and is assisting investigators with their inquiries.
The tragic death of Innocentia Atsufui Avinu has sparked grief and concern among students and staff of the University of Cape Coast, with many calling for enhanced security measures to protect students both on and off campus.
Police have pledged to provide further updates as investigations progress.
