United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has commended Ghana for its pivotal role in regional and continental stability, describing the country as “a fundamental pillar not only for West Africa but for the entire African continent.”
Mr Guterres made this remark during bilateral talks with President John Dramani Mahama on the sidelines of the ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9) in Japan. The high-level meeting was held as African leaders, global heads of state, and development partners converged in Tokyo to explore innovative solutions for trade, investment, and sustainable development.
In his engagement with the UN Secretary-General, President Mahama reasserted Ghana’s commitment to multilateralism and collaboration with global institutions to address pressing challenges, including peace, security, and economic recovery. The President stressed the importance of deeper partnerships in achieving sustainable development goals and tackling global crises.
While praising Ghana’s democratic credentials and leadership in peacekeeping, Mr Guterres assured President Mahama of the UN’s continued support for Ghana’s development agenda. He said, “Ghana has always demonstrated a commitment to peace, stability, and inclusive governance, making it a trusted partner in advancing Africa’s progress.”
President Mahama expressed appreciation for the UN’s partnership and reiterated Ghana’s determination to strengthen its role in promoting regional security and prosperity.
