The University of Ghana has strongly responded to remarks made by Rev. Lawrence Tetteh, who claimed on GTV’s Breakfast Show that HIV infections are prevalent among students.
In a statement released on October 24, 2024, the University called his comments “insensitive and highly disappointing” and asserted that these claims are “totally unfounded and not supported by available data.”
The University stressed that discussions around HIV/AIDS should be based on facts rather than speculation. “HIV status cannot be determined through counselling or prayer; scientific methods remain the only means for diagnosing infections,” the University stated, emphasizing that spreading such unsupported claims only serves to heighten public fear and perpetuate stigma.
Additionally, the University condemned Rev. Tetteh’s actions as violating ethical standards, cautioning against sensationalism when dealing with sensitive health issues.
“Linking HIV prevalence to specific demographics or institutions, especially without evidence, borders on sensationalism rather than meaningful health awareness,” they warned, noting the need to respect individuals’ confidentiality and privacy.
The University highlighted its comprehensive health and wellness initiatives, which include mandatory medical examinations for students and confidential counselling services. “We are committed to ensuring that health, privacy, and support services are top priorities on our campuses,” they assured.
Finally, the University called on Rev. Tetteh and GTV to issue a retraction and apology, urging media outlets and the public to handle health-related topics responsibly.
