A human and security development advocate, Robert Amoako Atta has called on government to redouble its efforts to addressing challenges confronting the security of the country.
According to him since there cannot be meaningful development without effective security system, it is imperative for government to scale up measures to sustain and protect the security of the state.
Addressing participants at the launch of the United Nations Association – Ghana Chapter at Large in Accra, Mr. Amoako Atta also underscored the importance of a multiple approach in tackling the security challenges confronting the West African Sub – Region.
“We believe government will also recognize the need for a broad-based global partnership in the ongoing battle against trans-boarder crimes, including terrorism and acts of piracy. It is regrettable that these scourges are sustained by unfettered access by non – state actors which they foster insecurity and instability across Africa.”
Mr. Amoako Atta also urged government to as a matter of urgency to “consider stimulating the robust application of human security framework in the human development approach at national and local levels. Above all, we hope government will contribute to the evolution of a holistic approach to the challenge of human security and the on-going process of national policy development and implementation thereby leading to the great promise that the Ghanaian nationhood has always held since independence,” he emphasized.”
The human and security advocate also called for a paradigm shift in relation to tackling security issues indicating that “there is the need to reconceptualize the issue of insecurity to go beyond the traditional notion of over-concentration on physical security characterized by heavy investments in military an d armed preparedness and response to focusing more on holistic dimensions of development and wellbeing that sustain the security of individuals and communities.”
“Unchecked poverty; persistent hunger; uncontrolled diseases; lack of access to basic services; disregard human rights; sub-optimal response to natural and manmade disasters; unfettered natural resources exploitation among others, pose serious threat to human development today.”
Mr. Amoako Atta also urged to guard against complacency since for quite a very long time now the world has not plunged into international war.
“Although our world has not witnessed a global war since the establishment of the United Nations, there have been several conflicts with devastating consequences and impact in virtually all regions of the world. As global citizens, we have a sacred duty to free our world of wars, rivalries, ethnic conflicts and religious divisions. Our collective effort in our drive for a better world will continue to bind us together.”
