If John Dramani Mahama, the leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is elected president in the upcoming December 7 general elections, he has promised to work with authorities and partners to get back money and property that were obtained through corruption.
Former President Mahama is worried about the growing number of corruption cases and the lack of financial discipline shown by the government led by President Akufo-Addo. He has promised to do his best to make sure all the money that was taken wrongly is returned if he wins the upcoming election.
During a live broadcast called “Mahama Conversations,” Mr. Mahama talked about how former Sanitation Minister Cecilia Dapaah had controversially hidden over $1 million in her home in Abelemkpe, which was then stolen by her house staff. He pledged to work with others to get back every single Cedi that was taken from taxpayers illegally.
Mr. Mahama said, “Despite all these economic and social problems, young people keep seeing how officials from the [New Patriotic Party] administration and their families are living in luxury, chartering private jets at $20,000 per hour for trips that our own Falcon Executive Jet could have done.” He also mentioned that the Minister for Defence had explained that the Falcon Executive Jet didn’t have a shower for the president to use.
He added, “The youth of Ghana have also seen how a minister could hide millions of dollars in her home, and only God knows how much of Ghanaian taxpayers’ money has been hidden away by many others.”
“But I tell the good people of Ghana that, working with Ghanaians and international partners who fight corruption, we will do everything possible to get back the wealth that was taken in the wrong way,” Mahama declared.
