In an exclusive interview, Akwasi Baffour, the eldest son of the late Ghanaian politician and activist Akua Donkor, confirmed the sudden and tragic circumstances of his mother’s passing, which unfolded within a single day. Speaking over the phone, Baffour recounted how the family received an unexpected call in the early hours of Monday, October 28, informing them of her deteriorating health.
According to Baffour, the news of his mother’s condition reached him at around 4 a.m., prompting immediate concern as he had not heard of any prior health issues. Family members quickly transported Donkor to the Nsawam Government Hospital, but her condition necessitated a transfer to Ridge Hospital in Accra.
“It is true that my mother is dead,” Baffour stated somberly. “Around 4 a.m. yesterday, some relatives in Accra alerted us that she was unwell. My sister informed me that they had rushed her to the government hospital at Nsawam, but due to her worsening condition, she was referred to Ridge Hospital.”
At Ridge Hospital, Baffour was in communication with the attending doctor, who informed him that Donkor’s condition was critical. Medical staff administered IV fluids and a blood transfusion in an attempt to stabilize her. However, despite the efforts, Akua Donkor’s health declined rapidly, and she passed away later that night.
“They kept us updated throughout the day, and the doctor told us he was doing everything possible,” Baffour recounted. “In the evening, around 10 p.m., we received the call that she hadn’t made it, despite the treatments.”
Baffour shared that the family had not yet been informed of the exact cause of death, adding that his mother, who was 83, had visited them only three weeks prior in seemingly good health.
