Ghana is sitting on a ticking time bomb, and if urgent action is not taken, the future of our youth may be lost. That was the powerful warning issued by Lawyer Twum, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), during a hard-hitting interview with Ransford Boakye on Pampaso, on Radio Gold.
He cautioned: “If you’re involved in the drug trade and haven’t been arrested yet, stop now. This is your opportunity to walk away before the law catches up with you. It’s never too late to choose a different path.”
Drawing from field intelligence and recent developments, Lawyer Twum expressed deep concern about the rising abuse of illicit substances among Ghana’s youth.
“If we don’t tackle the drug menace with utmost seriousness, there’ll be no proper youth left in this country in the next five years. The signs are already showing, and they’re worrying,” he added.
Lawyer Twum also issued a stern warning to pharmacy owners complicit in the sale of a dangerous concoction known on the streets as “Red.”
“If you’re a pharmacy owner selling ‘Red’, and we catch you, that will be the end of your business. No licence gives you the right to destroy lives for profit,” he warned.
But beyond the legal threats and policy enforcement, Lawyer Twum offered hope and compassion to those seeking a way out.
“If you’re involved in drugs and want to quit, you’re not alone. We have counselling services and support systems in place. Don’t be afraid to seek help. A better life is possible,” the Deputy CEO assured.
As families, communities, and institutions wrestle with the fallout from the drug crisis, Lawyer Twum’s message lands with urgency and clarity: this is not just a fight for law enforcement, it is a fight for the soul of the nation.
Ghana must rise to the moment. We owe it to our youth to face this crisis together, decisively, but humanely.
