The Minister for Interior, Hon. Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has disclosed that he personally reached out to Hon. Mavis Hawa Koomson, Former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, urging her to cooperate with the Ghana Police Service in an ongoing investigation into an alleged assault incident during the recently held Ablekuma North re-run election.
In a media briefing on Monday, Hon. Muntaka stressed the importance of upholding the rule of law regardless of one’s political affiliation or public office.
“I have personally called Hawa Koomson and urged her to assist the Police to investigate the assault case against her during the Ablekuma North re-run election,” the Interior Minister revealed.
The alleged incident occurred during the contentious re-run of the Ablekuma North parliamentary election on Friday, which was marred by pockets of violence and reported cases of intimidation at some polling stations.
According to eyewitnesses, a confrontation involving Hon. Koomson’s entourage allegedly escalated into physical assault against a polling agent affiliated with an opposing party. The matter has since been reported to the Ghana Police Service.
Hon. Muntaka reiterated that the law will take its full course, and no individual is above accountability.
“We are committed to ensuring peace, law, and order in our democratic processes. Anyone found culpable, regardless of their political standing, will face the full rigours of the law,” he added.
He also assured the public that the Police have commenced a thorough investigation and urged all parties and eyewitnesses to come forward with credible information.
The Ghana Police Service has yet to issue a formal update on the case.
Meanwhile, calls are growing from civil society organizations and election observers for a transparent and impartial probe into the incident.
