President John Dramani Mahama has removed the Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, from office with immediate effect, in accordance with Article 146(9) of the 1992 Constitution.
The decision follows the receipt of a report from the Committee of Inquiry established under Article 146(6) to investigate a petition submitted by a Ghanaian citizen, Mr. Daniel Ofori.

According to the Committee’s findings, the grounds of stated misbehaviour under Article 146(1) were proven and therefore warranted the Chief Justice’s removal. The Committee subsequently recommended her dismissal.
“Under Article 146(9), the President is required to act in accordance with the committee’s recommendation,” a statement signed by the Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu (MP), said.
Justice Torkornoo, who was appointed Chief Justice in June 2023, becomes the second head of Ghana’s judiciary to be removed through the constitutional impeachment process.

The Presidency noted that processes regarding additional petitions before the Committee are ongoing, and updates will be communicated in due course.
