The Government of Ghana has donated 2,000 laptops to the University of Ghana as part of efforts to strengthen digital literacy and expand technology education nationwide. The latest delivery builds on an earlier donation of 500 laptops under the flagship One Million Coders Programme (OMCP), an initiative designed to equip young Ghanaians with in-demand digital skills for the global technology industry.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, described the programme as a key pillar of the government’s strategy to develop a digitally skilled workforce. He said the initiative is focused on training young people in critical areas such as software engineering, artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, and data analytics to enhance innovation, improve employability, and position Ghana as a competitive player in the digital economy.
The Minister praised the University of Ghana for integrating coding and digital skills into its academic curriculum. According to him, making digital literacy and AI education compulsory across disciplines—including healthcare, business, and public policy—recognizes the growing importance of technology in every sector of the economy.
To further strengthen the partnership, the government plans to provide additional computers, improve internet connectivity across the university, and support AI-focused training programmes for lecturers and faculty members.
Mr. George also encouraged private sector organizations, particularly financial institutions and telecommunications companies, to support the initiative through sponsorships, mentorship opportunities, and employment pathways for graduates. He acknowledged the contributions of industry partners such as Google, MTN, Telecel, and Huawei for their continued commitment to advancing Ghana’s digital transformation agenda.
The newly donated laptops are expected to enhance practical learning, research, and innovation, giving students greater access to the tools needed to develop technical expertise and solve real-world challenges.
