President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in New York to participate in the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which officially opens this week.
The President, accompanied by his wife, Mrs. Lordina Mahama, touched down on Sunday afternoon and was warmly received by Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. Other officials on hand to welcome him included the Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Administration, Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Smith, and the Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.
At the airport, dozens of Ghanaians living in the United States also turned out to cheer the President, commending him for the bold economic and social reforms his administration has embarked upon. Many described his leadership as a turning point in stabilizing Ghana’s economy and restoring investor confidence.
During his stay in New York, President Mahama is scheduled to deliver Ghana’s national statement to the General Assembly on Thursday, where he is expected to highlight Ghana’s development priorities, advocate for stronger global action on climate change, and call for reforms in international financing to support African economies.
In addition to addressing the Assembly, the President will hold bilateral meetings with world leaders, including discussions on regional peace and security in West Africa, particularly the fight against terrorism and violent extremism in the Sahel.
He is also expected to participate in high-level dialogues on health, energy transition, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The 80th UNGA has drawn global attention as it comes at a critical time when nations are grappling with economic recovery, climate challenges, and mounting security threats.
President Mahama’s engagements are anticipated to further strengthen Ghana’s role on the international stage and reinforce partnerships aimed at advancing the country’s development agenda.
