Associate Professor of Accounting and Finance at Accra Technical University, Prof. Ibrahim Zubeiru, has called for urgent reforms to address rising indiscipline in Ghanaian schools.
Speaking on the Gold Morning Show, Prof. Zubeiru said there was an urgent need to tackle what he described as the “cankers” affecting discipline in schools. He urged education authorities to review both the code of ethics and the code of discipline to strengthen standards of conduct.
He also stressed that parents have a critical role to play in raising disciplined children, arguing that some parents undermine teachers by opposing disciplinary measures and, in some cases, confronting teachers for correcting their children.
“When parents attack teachers for correcting their wards, it gives children the impression that they can misbehave and disrespect their teachers,” he said.
Prof. Zubeiru noted that while teachers shape children through classroom instruction, guidance, and counselling, parents must reinforce those values at home to ensure they translate into good behaviour.
