The Ghana Police Service has announced a series of major breakthroughs in its fight against armed robbery, including the arrest of several suspected criminals and the recovery of at least 11 AK-47 assault rifles and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, disclosed this on Monday, September 7, 2026, during a press briefing at the National Police Headquarters in Accra.

According to the IGP, the breakthroughs followed weeks of intelligence gathering and coordinated operations targeting criminal gangs operating across several parts of the country.

He said the operations, conducted in the Western, Northern, Savannah and Greater Accra regions, had resulted in the arrest of numerous suspects, the recovery of weapons and ammunition, and the disruption of planned robbery attacks.

One of the major cases involved the arrest of a 32-year-old suspect, Abraham Awundok, in connection with the murder of Dr. Jesse Amuah and his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Amuah Esi, who were reported missing in April 2026.

The Police said investigations established that Awundok, who worked as an errand boy for the couple, murdered them before taking their mobile phones, money and private vehicle and fleeing to the United Arab Emirates.

He was subsequently declared wanted through an INTERPOL Red Notice and deported from Dubai to Ghana on August 30, 2026. The suspect, according to the Police, admitted to the murders during interrogation and remains in custody as investigations continue.

The Police also foiled a planned robbery attack on banks in the Labone and Cantonments areas of Accra.

The suspected gang had allegedly been monitoring banks and their customers, with some members armed with pistols. Police said two suspects were shot dead during the operation, one escaped, while another was arrested.

A search of a Toyota Highlander used by the suspects resulted in the recovery of 13 different vehicle registration numbers and a Blow F90 pistol. Investigations further revealed that the suspects allegedly brought vehicles into Ghana and changed their Nigerian number plates to Ghanaian registration numbers to facilitate their criminal activities.

In the Western Region, five suspects were arrested following intelligence-led operations targeting a robbery gang allegedly responsible for attacks on gold dealers’ shops, mining sites and communities in Wassa Akropong, Diaso, Dome, Abofour Camp and the Manso enclave.

The operation, conducted between August and September 4, 2026, resulted in the recovery of three AK-47 rifles, five magazines, 357 rounds of AK-47 ammunition and two vehicles. One suspect died during the operation.

Meanwhile, three suspects have been arrested in connection with a series of armed robberies in Buipe, Tamale and Mion.

The suspects—Yacouba Oumar, Abdul Alhassan Kudus and Abdul Rahman Haruna alias Saaga—are allegedly linked to a gang operating with two AK-47 rifles and a pump-action gun. Police said the gang was also involved in the robbery and murder of a mobile money vendor at Fofulso near the Damango junction earlier this year.

The alleged mastermind of the June 29 robbery at the Buipe Cattle Market, Alhaji Imoro Beliko, also known as Alhaji Yacouba, Masaji, Muimen or Yakubu, died after allegedly attempting to escape during a police operation.

The robbery resulted in the theft of GH¢430,000 from two mobile money vendors. Police said Beliko had allegedly contracted robbers and supplied weapons for attacks on people carrying large sums of money to the market.

On the Accra-Kumasi highway, Police arrested the alleged leader of a gang linked to a robbery on the Enyiresi-Sekyere stretch on August 18, 2026.

The suspects include the alleged gang leader, his biological mother, an alleged weapons supplier and two other persons. A 14-year-old juvenile who allegedly served as a lookout was also arrested.

Police recovered a pump-action gun, a double-barrel gun, three single-barrel guns, a locally manufactured pistol, ammunition, cutlasses, handcuffs, jack knives, pepper spray, a tactical vest and an unregistered motorbike.

In another major weapons haul, five suspects were arrested between June and July 2026 for allegedly trading in firearms.

Police recovered eight AK-47 assault rifles, one SMG rifle and two foreign pistols. The five suspects have since been remanded into lawful custody by the Accra Circuit Court, with the case adjourned to September 8, 2026.

The IGP commended police officers involved in the operations and credited logistical support from President John Dramani Mahama’s government, particularly the provision of armoured vehicles and pick-ups.

He also appealed to the public to continue providing credible intelligence on suspects still at large, assuring citizens that information provided to the Police would be treated confidentially.

The Police Emergency Line is 191.

Mr Yohuno warned criminals that the Police Administration would sustain its operations until criminal networks were dismantled.

“No matter where you run, no matter where you hide, we will come for you,” the IGP said.
