Speaking on PM Express with Evan’s Mensa, the legal expert Samson Lardy Anyenini said the Attorney-General’s decision to reject a €2 million plea bargain in the ambulance case is questionable.
He said the state should be interested in recovering the money, so the AG must explain why the plea deal was rejected.
The AG has faced criticism recently after Richard Jakpa, an accused in the case, claimed the AG pressured him to implicate former Deputy Finance Minister Dr. Ato Forson, which goes against legal ethics.
Dr. Forson, the minority leader in parliament, and two others are on trial for allegedly causing €2.37 million financial loss to the state through the importation of 30 ambulances during the previous administration.
Why Reject the Money?
In Lardy’s opinion, the AG should have prioritized recovering funds for the state.
“We are pursuing the €2.4 million, and one accused offered €2 million, which I’m told was increased later. Why reject that plea offer?” he questioned.
“The AG owes us an explanation because we’re interested in the money. Criminal prosecution may lead to jail time as a deterrent, but plea bargains exist for a reason,” he added.
