Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has defended government’s decision to discontinue the Unibank case, insisting that while he remains committed to jailing individuals who loot state resources, practical considerations sometimes necessitate alternative approaches.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series at the Presidency, Dr. Ayine made it clear that his stance on prosecuting corruption remains firm but pragmatic.
“Make no mistake about my intentions. I want to jail persons who have looted state resources, but at the same time, I am pragmatic enough to know that it is not in every instance that that is possible,” Dr. Ayine asserted.
Explaining the government’s decision to drop the Unibank case, the Attorney General noted that certain legal, financial, and evidentiary hurdles sometimes make continued prosecution counterproductive.
However, he stressed that the government remains focused on recovering funds and ensuring accountability through other lawful means.
Dr. Ayine reaffirmed his ministry’s commitment to pursuing cases where convictions are viable while protecting the state’s broader financial and legal interests.
