The security infrastructure of the University of Ghana has received a significant boost following the donation of two pickup vehicles and ten motorcycles to enhance patrol operations and emergency response on campus.
The presentation ceremony, held at the university forecourt, was made possible through a partnership between the Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly and Hisense Ghana as part of efforts to strengthen safety and security within the institution.
Speaking at the event, the Municipal Chief Executive for Ayawaso West, Michael Mensah, described the donation as more than a mere gesture, stressing that it symbolized partnership, responsibility and a shared commitment to national development.
According to him, the collaboration demonstrates the transformative impact that can be achieved when public institutions and private sector organizations work together toward a common goal.
Mr. Mensah underscored the importance of security to the university’s operations, noting that the institution plays a critical role in leadership development, innovation and national progress.
“Security is not an accessory to development; it is the foundation for development,” he stated. “Students cannot thrive in fear, lecturers cannot effectively impart knowledge in insecurity, and research and innovation cannot flourish in an unsafe environment.”
He commended Hisense Ghana for what he described as exemplary corporate citizenship and said the donation would significantly improve the operational capacity of the university’s Safety and Security Directorate.
The MCE further urged security personnel to maintain the vehicles and motorcycles professionally to ensure their long-term sustainability and effectiveness.
Receiving the items on behalf of the university, the Registrar, Emelia Agyei-Mensah, expressed appreciation to the management of Hisense for the timely intervention.
She explained that the donation comes at a critical moment following the university’s decision to elevate its security unit into a fully-fledged Directorate, a move intended to strengthen campus safety and support the institution’s academic mission.
According to her, the enhancement of security services aligns with the university’s broader strategic priorities of creating a transformative student experience and maintaining a peaceful environment conducive to teaching, learning and research.
“The university aims to do so many things; we cannot do it in a vacuum,” she said, emphasizing the importance of partnerships with corporate organizations in advancing institutional development.
Mrs. Agyei-Mensah assured the donors that the fleet would be used strictly for its intended purpose and charged the Directorate of Security to ensure proper maintenance of the vehicles and motorcycles.
She added that demonstrating accountability and good stewardship of the donated resources could encourage additional support from other development partners in the future.
