With 13 days remaining, New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Dr Bryan Acheampong has declared himself the only candidate capable of uniting the party and leading it to victory in the 2028 general elections.
He prophesied that deep internal divisions within the party significantly contributed to its defeat in the last general election and must be resolved if the NPP is to regain power.
Dr Acheampong delivered his remarks while addressing party delegates in Obom, Amasaman, and Trobu constituencies on Saturday, 17 January 2026, during the second and final day of his Greater Accra regional campaign ahead of the party’s flagbearer elections.
“Remember, we lost the last election, and we were on our way for just a Thank You Tour. Even so, we were not able to complete it because of petty fights. Some people were dropped from the bus and were told that utterances from their mouths contributed to our loss,” he told the delegates.
He questioned whether the party could truly unite behind other leading contenders should they emerge victorious.
“I have this question for you all, and it is because we are all seeking power. Who among you here believes that if Kennedy Agyapong wins, Abronye DC and the supporters of Dr Bawumia would support him for us to win power?” he asked.
Dr Acheampong raised a similar concern in the event of a Dr Mahamudu Bawumia victory, suggesting that internal divisions would persist.
“What about when the situation is vice versa in the case of Dr Bawumia? I am the only one who can unify this party for victory in 2028,” he said.
He urged delegates to rally behind his leadership, insisting that his candidacy offers the party its best chance of reclaiming power.
“You all know that if we push these two, we will struggle to win power. Present me, let me win that power for our party,” he added.
He emphasised the importance of humility and acceptance as the NPP prepares to elect its flagbearer ahead of the 2028 general elections.
He urged them to choose a candidate capable of uniting the party and steering it to electoral success.
Addressing the delegates, he stressed that all aspirants must be willing to accept the outcome of the internal contest and support the eventual winner.
“What God wills is what will happen. About three weeks ago, a fellow contender, Kennedy Agyapong, was on a TV station and was asked that if he loses, would he support the candidate who won, and he said he was not going to provide an answer to that. I was taken aback,” Dr Acheampong said.
He added that participating in a contest requires faith in the process and in God’s plan.
“This is a contest, so you just go with whatever you get. Because when you lose, it could be that God willed it for you. He may be saving you from what is ahead of you. You even have to thank Him for that,” he stated.
Dr Acheampong’s remarks come amid calls within the NPP for unity and discipline, as the party seeks to consolidate its base and present a cohesive front ahead of the 2028 elections.
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, Dr Bryan Acheampong, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong are figures contesting the NPP presidential primaries scheduled for 31 January 2026, which will determine the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 election.
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Vice President and 2024 flagbearer candidate, is widely viewed as a leading contender for the 2028 nomination.
Kennedy Agyapong, former MP for Assin Central and businessman, is actively campaigning for job creation and warning against intimidation ahead of the party’s primaries.
Dr Bryan Acheampong, MP for Abetifi and former Minister, is campaigning on unity and renewal within the party.
Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, a former Minister of Education and current MP for Bosomtwe, has formally picked nomination forms and is contesting the flagbearer race.
Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, former NPP General Secretary, is also in the race, though there have been reports of campaign difficulties, including being cash-strapped.
