The Ghanaian government is urging the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) to reconsider its decision to go on strike over the appointment of Samuel Adom Botchway as Registrar of the Births and Deaths Registry.
Felix Kwakye Ofosu, spokesperson for President John Dramani Mahama, made this appeal during a press briefing in Accra, stating that the president’s appointment of Botchway was correct and that there’s no sufficient basis for a strike.
CLOGSAG had announced a nationwide strike starting Thursday, February 20, 2025, in response to Botchway’s appointment, citing concerns over his status as a politically exposed person.
However, the government maintains that the strike will be unfair to the Ghanaian people who pay the wages of public officers, including CLOGSAG members.
The government acknowledges the importance of strike actions as a mechanism for workers to drive home their demands but emphasizes that a strike is not justified in this instance.
Instead, the government is calling for further dialogue with CLOGSAG to resolve the issue.
