The timely intervention of personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service and the Ghana Police Service prevented a middle-aged man from committing suicide.
Alfred Agoma, who claimed to be from Ashaiman Lebanon, in the Greater Accra Region, climbed an electrically-wired high-tension pole in an attempt to end his life after being diagnosed with kidney failure.
In a video shared by an account on X, the highest blog, Alfred Agoma said he could not afford his medical bills when he was referred to the UGMC hospital.
“When I got diagnosed with kidney sickness, I went to visit the health centre, Ashiaman Polyclinic. They directed me to visit the Tema General Hospital.
“I proceeded to Tema General Hospital but when I got there, they told me to seek healthcare from the University of Ghana Medical Center (UGMC). I have tried all means but it has proved futile and now I’m tired,” he said.
Alfred Agoma explained that the high cost of medical bills for treating his kidney problems was the main reason he attempted suicide.
“I returned back to the hospital but they told me I can’t afford the bills so I decided to just end my life,” he said amid tears.
Meanwhile, fire service personnel at the scene stated that the situation could have been much worse if it hadn’t been reported on time.
“He’s able to speak and answer questions when you talk to him but he is not conscious. It could be that he suffers from some mental health condition. When I asked, he was able to tell me his name and where he lives which is Lebanon zone 2.
“From what he is saying, he has been diagnosed with a kidney problem. From the look of things, he was expecting help from somewhere but they have disappointed him which caused him to attempt suicide,” he explained.
