In a shocking incident that has left residents and authorities baffled, an Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) transformer was stolen by unknown individuals at Bunso in the Eastern Region’s Fanteakwa South District. The 100kVA transformer, valued at a staggering GH¢ 71,000, was taken from its location next to the Bunso Police barrier, just a stone’s throw away from both the police station and the Fire Service command.
The transformer, which was stationed on the land of the CSIR- Plant Genetic Resources Research Institute, is believed to have been stolen while personnel were on duty, raising questions about the security measures in place. The brazen theft has resulted in power outages for the affected institutions and households in the area for over a week, causing significant inconvenience and disruption to daily life.
Sources at the Eastern Regional Office of the power distribution company have expressed deep concern over the recurring attacks on their installations. They are now working diligently to replace the stolen transformer, which will come at an additional 20 percent cost to the already substantial loss.
The management of the ECG has called upon security agencies to be more proactive and vigilant in their efforts to apprehend the criminal elements responsible for these thefts, as their activities pose a serious threat to the stability of the power supply in the region.
As investigations into the incident continue, residents and authorities alike are hoping for a swift resolution and the implementation of more robust security measures to prevent such audacious crimes from occurring in the future. The theft of the ECG transformer has not only highlighted the need for increased vigilance but also underscored the importance of collaborative efforts between utility companies and law enforcement agencies in safeguarding critical infrastructure.
