The Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) has officially declared its support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the upcoming December 7, 2024, general election.
This endorsement comes in the wake of the Electoral Commission’s (EC) disqualification of the GFP’s presidential candidate, Philip Appiah Kubi, popularly known as Roman Fada, on November 12. Mr. Kubi’s candidacy was invalidated due to irregularities in his nomination forms following the untimely death of the party’s original flagbearer, Akua Donkor.
At a media briefing on Wednesday, December 4, the GFP’s Deputy General Secretary, Jerry Addo, announced the party’s decision to back the NDC after extensive consultations with its leadership. He emphasized that the alignment of the NDC’s policies with the GFP’s core values was the primary reason for their endorsement.
“The Ghana Freedom Party is endorsing His Excellency John Dramani Mahama as our candidate for Saturday’s election. He is the leader we believe can deliver the change Ghanaians need,” Mr. Addo stated.
He highlighted two key NDC policies that resonated deeply with the GFP’s vision: the establishment of a Women’s Development Bank and the waiver of academic fees for first-year tertiary students, including those with disabilities.
“Our late flagbearer, Akua Donkor, was a strong advocate for women’s welfare.
The NDC’s commitment to establishing a Women’s Development Bank is perfectly aligned with her vision,” Mr. Addo explained.
He further noted that the GFP’s late leader, despite her lack of formal education, valued access to quality education. “The NDC’s promise of free tertiary education for first-year students reflects her aspirations for the youth of Ghana,” he added.
Mr. Addo stressed that the decision was made independently, without coercion or external influence, after thoroughly analyzing the manifestos and policies of all political parties and candidates.
The endorsement of the NDC by the Ghana Freedom Party marks a significant development in the lead-up to the 2024 elections, with the GFP urging its supporters to rally behind John Dramani Mahama and the NDC parliamentary candidates.
