The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, has assured Ghanaians of a stable electricity supply, despite the national grid recording a historic peak in power demand, particularly during the ongoing festive period.
The Minister gave the assurance while addressing participants at a health walk organised by the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, in collaboration with its agencies, under the theme “Recharge, Refocus and Reconnect.”
Dr Jinapor acknowledged that rising electricity consumption has placed significant pressure on the national grid but stressed that measures are in place to maintain system stability.
“Let me assure the people of Ghana that those of us in the Ministry will continue to work very hard. It is very challenging, but so far we are holding on, we are making significant improvements, and we will continue to work to deliver on our mandate,”
he said.
He disclosed that the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) recently recorded an all-time peak demand of about 4,300 megawatts, underscoring the growing strain on the power system.
“We are seeing a huge increase in energy consumption, and that presents a challenge. It means we have to work very hard to sustain the lights and keep the lights on,”
the Minister noted.
Dr Jinapor emphasised that the Ministry and its allied agencies would intensify efforts to manage the immediate pressure on the grid, while also pursuing longer-term solutions. These include boosting fuel availability for thermal plants, strengthening petroleum production, and accelerating the deployment of renewable energy projects to reduce dependence on conventional power sources.
Addressing legal professionals from the Ministry and its agencies who took part in the walk, the Minister highlighted their critical role in safeguarding the sector’s interests.
“You review all our contracts and ensure negotiations go very well. I want to encourage you to give your best and work very hard,”
he said.
The health walk, which attracted participation from legal staff across the energy sector, was praised by the Minister as a valuable initiative promoting wellness and inter-agency collaboration. He proposed that it be institutionalised as a quarterly sector-wide activity to strengthen networking and cohesion.
Concluding his remarks, Dr Jinapor reiterated the government’s commitment to delivering reliable electricity to Ghanaians.
“We are making improvements and will continue to work hard to deliver on our mandate,”
he assured.
