Former Member of Parliament for Mpohor, Alex K. Agyekum, has called on parliamentary leadership to foster political tolerance and prevent escalating partisan divisions following the recent transition in Majority Leadership.

Cautioning against allowing Parliament to descend into political confrontation, Agyekum warned that social media commentary is fueling unnecessary friction between the Majority and Minority caucuses. He urged the incoming Majority Leader, James Agalga, to remain focused on the House’s constitutional mandate rather than distracting political narratives.

He appealed to the Speaker and parliamentary leadership to uphold strict neutrality, ensuring proceedings adhere strictly to the Standing Orders and the Constitution. He emphasized that Parliament’s core purpose, lawmaking and scrutiny of the Executive must not be compromised.

The former lawmaker highlighted that bipartisan cooperation is particularly vital as Parliament prepares to debate non-entrenched constitutional amendments recommended by the Constitution Review Committee. He raised concerns over whether a deeply polarized House could build the consensus necessary to pass critical national legislation.

Challenging Leader of Government Business James Agalga to prioritize dialogue over partisan acrimony, Agyekum urged both sides of the aisle to reject boycotts and entrenched positions, placing the dignity and stability of the institution above political rivalries.
