Franklin Cudjoe, President of IMANI Africa, has called for the immediate release of New Patriotic Party communicator Kwame Baffoe, arguing that police should not be used to suppress free expression and political commentary.
In a strongly worded social media post, Cudjoe criticised what he described as the growing tendency to arrest individuals over political opinions and criticisms directed at public officials or government projects.
“Please release Abronye DC immediately,” he wrote. “It should not be the duty of police officers to sheepishly appease politicians by arresting anyone who freely expresses an opinion on another person’s perceived political association, or who simply questions why certain projects have stalled.”
Cudjoe further referenced a legal precedent from South Africa involving former President Jacob Zuma, noting that even harsh criticism of political leaders could fall within the boundaries of fair comment and free speech.
He added that public officials should develop tolerance for criticism rather than resort to intimidation through arrests.
“I have learned that not every barking dog requires attention — and there are far too many stray, rabid dogs everywhere. Avoid them,” he stated.
The comments come amid public debate over freedom of speech, political intolerance, and the role of law enforcement in handling politically charged statements in Ghana.
The circumstances surrounding Abronye DC’s arrest have sparked mixed reactions on social media, with supporters describing the move as politically motivated, while others insist public figures must be held accountable for their statements.
