The Ministry of Health has announced that the government’s free primary healthcare programme will be rolled out across Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds up to polyclinics nationwide.
Spokesperson for the Ministry, Tony Goodman, explained that the selected facilities provide services that fall within the scope of primary healthcare, making them the starting point for the initiative.
Speaking on the Gold Morning Conversation, he indicated that Ghanaians will be able to access free healthcare services at these facilities upon presentation of a valid national identification card.
“This programme is designed to ensure that basic healthcare is accessible to all Ghanaians at the primary level,” he stated.
The initiative forms part of the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) 2024 manifesto promises aimed at improving access to healthcare across the country.
Mr Goodman noted that the government is confident the programme will significantly reduce pressure on the Ghana Medical Trust Fund by shifting focus towards early and preventive care.
He added that the programme will prioritise preventive healthcare delivery, with services expected to be extended to communities and households across the country.
According to him, bringing healthcare closer to the people will not only improve health outcomes but also ease the burden on higher-level health facilities.
