The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has accepted Laryea Kingston’s resignation as head coach of the Black Starlets, but not without making some startling allegations that shed light on the strained relationship between the coach and the football Association.

According to a press release issued by the GFA on Sunday, May 26, 2024, which has since been revised, Kingston announced his resignation to the Black Starlets players using “inappropriate language.” The statement also claimed that “Coach Kingston got off the team bus while the team was on its way to the team hotel” and “failed to attend the team’s evening meeting with the Management Committee.”

The GFA’s allegations paint a picture of a coach who had seemingly checked out of his responsibilities even before formally tendering his resignation. The use of “inappropriate language” and the alleged abandonment of his team at a crucial moment raise questions about Kingston’s professionalism and commitment to his role.

Kingston’s resignation came in the wake of the Black Starlets’ disappointing 2-1 defeat to Burkina Faso in the WAFU Zone B Under-17 championship on Saturday, May 25, 2024. The loss was a bitter pill to swallow for the Starlets, who had previously coasted through their first two matches in the competition.

In his post-match comments, Laryea alluded to his decision to resign, stating, “I know Ghanaians know me as a player and are familiar with the sacrifices I made for the country during my playing days. I gave my all as a player, but in the end, I wasn’t happy. I put more focus on my coaching career and educated myself to make sure I came back to change the narrative around Ghanaian Football.”

He continued, “Within these past seven months as Head Coach, I’ve given my all. I decided when we came back from Russia that I would resign after the WAFU competition. The explanation will come later.”

Kingston’s words suggest a man who had already made up his mind to step down, regardless of the outcome of the tournament. However, the GFA’s allegations cast a shadow over his departure, raising questions about the circumstances that led to this point.

Under Kingston’s leadership, the Black Starlets had an impressive record, scoring 54 goals and conceding only 15. His tenure, while short-lived, had shown promise and potential for the future of Ghana’s youth football.

As the dust settles on this shocking turn of events, fans and pundits alike will be eager to hear Kingston’s side of the story. The promise of an explanation from the former coach leaves room for speculation and intrigue about what really transpired behind the scenes.

The GFA, for its part, will now be tasked with finding a suitable replacement to guide the Black Starlets forward. The allegations against Kingston, however, may make it difficult to attract top coaching talent, as the incident raises concerns about the working environment within the national team setup.

Only time will tell how this saga will unfold, but one thing is certain: Laryea Kingston’s resignation and the GFA’s shocking allegations have sent shockwaves through the Ghanaian football community, leaving many questions unanswered and a cloud of uncertainty hanging over the future of the Black Starlets.
