Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening trade, investment, and diplomatic cooperation with the United States, as Ambassador Victor Emmanuel Smith officially commenced his tenure in Washington after presenting his credentials to U.S. President Donald J. Trump.
The formal ceremony took place at the Oval Office of the White House, where Ambassador Smith was among 14 envoys accredited to the United States. The presentation marked the official start of his diplomatic assignment as Ghana’s top representative in Washington.
During the engagement, Ambassador Smith conveyed a message from President John Dramani Mahama, underscoring Ghana’s desire to strengthen its long-standing partnership with the United States and expand collaboration in key economic and strategic areas.
He highlighted Ghana’s democratic stability and its growing role as a regional and continental hub for trade and investment, noting that the country offers American businesses access to a sub-regional market of over 400 million people and a continental market exceeding 1.4 billion people.
Ambassador Smith also underscored Ghana’s strategic importance as host of the Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), positioning the country at the centre of Africa’s integrated trade agenda.
According to the Ghanaian envoy, Ghana is keen to deepen engagement with U.S. companies, particularly in manufacturing, agribusiness, energy, technology and services, as part of efforts to drive industrialisation, job creation and sustainable economic growth.
He further expressed Ghana’s readiness to welcome President Trump to Accra, describing a potential visit as an opportunity to elevate bilateral relations and unlock new avenues of cooperation between the two nations.
The presentation of credentials signals a renewed phase of U.S.–Ghana engagement, with a strong focus on economic diplomacy, investment promotion and people-to-people relations, as Ambassador Smith begins his mission to advance Ghana’s interests in the United States.
Notably, Ambassador Smith was the first ambassador to be received by President Trump during the session, a moment that underscored the significance of Ghana’s diplomatic engagement with the United States.
President Trump reacted warmly upon seeing the Ghanaian envoy, exclaiming, “Look at this good-looking guy,” drawing light-hearted laughter in the room and setting a cordial tone for the engagement.
