The Government has strongly condemned the attempted arrest of a JoyNews reporter and the reported assault of an eyewitness by a military officer at a demolition site.
In a statement issued by the Minister for Government Communications and Spokesperson to the President, Hon. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Mahama administration described the incident as “utterly unacceptable” and a direct affront to the values of Ghana’s democracy.
“I am directed by President John Dramani Mahama to unequivocally reaffirm his unwavering commitment to the freedom and safety of journalists.
A free and unfettered press is a cornerstone of our democracy, essential for accountability, transparency, and informed public discourse,” the statement said.
The Government further reiterated its broader commitment to protecting the rights and safety of all citizens, stressing that such acts of intimidation or abuse will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
In response to the incident, President Mahama has instructed the Minister for Defence and the National Security Coordinator to launch a full investigation.
The statement emphasized that “appropriate disciplinary and punitive measures must be applied without delay to ensure accountability and prevent future occurrences.”
The Government reassured the public of its determination to uphold democratic values, human rights, and the rule of law at all times.
