The Government of Ghana has formally lodged a strong protest and expressed deep displeasure over the recent “ill-treatment” and “inhumane and traumatic” targeting of Ghanaian nationals by Israeli border authorities at the Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv.
The incident, which began on Sunday, December 7, 2025, involved several Ghanaian travellers who were allegedly subjected to undue detention and harassment upon arrival.
Of particular concern, the government highlighted the detention of four members of a Ghanaian Parliamentary delegation. The delegates were travelling to Tel Aviv to participate in the ongoing Annual International Cybersecurity Conference.
These four officials were detained without a “justifiable cause” for over five hours, with their release only secured following what the government described as “strenuous diplomatic intervention.” In a related incident on the same day, the remaining three Ghanaian travellers were deported on the next available flight and have since arrived back in Ghana.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the actions of the Israeli authorities, stating they were unfairly targeting Ghanaian citizens and conveying strong reservations against the humiliating treatment. The government stressed that the long-standing, cordial relations between Ghana and Israel, which span more than six decades, have historically involved “considerable high volumes of unimpeded travel by citizens of both nations.” A statement from the Foreign Affairs Ministry read; “This condemnable conduct by Israeli authorities is extremely provocative, unacceptable and inconsistent with our friendly historical relations.”
The Ghanaian government through the Ministry also refuted the justification provided by the Israeli , which cited an alleged non-cooperation from the Ghanaian Embassy in Tel Aviv regarding the deportation of Ghanaians already in Israeli custody. Following its enquiries, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs found the claim to be “totally untenable,” confirming that the mission in Tel Aviv has been “responsive and compliant with international law” in its dealings.
In immediate response to the incident, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is scheduled to summon officials of the Israeli Embassy in Accra this morning to formally convey the government’s displeasure in the strongest possible terms. The statement concluded by confirming that the government is “considering appropriate reciprocal action” in light of the incidents.
