The Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) is initiating steps to get the right medication at the right time for Ghanaians. It will be serving under this new health intervention initiative.
On Wednesday, on the sidelines of the ongoing WHX Leaders Africa Summit in Accra, the Administrator of the Fund, Obuobia Darko-Opoku, met with a delegation from Pfizer, an American Multinational Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Corporation.
The meeting discussed ways the two entities could partner and fashion out ways Ghanaians could enjoy the best of healthcare, especially under the
Ghana Medical Trust Fund.
Madam Darko-Opoku told the delegation “the GMTF will leave no stone unturned in its quest to achieve its four main pillars which are providing
financial assistance for approved persons accessing specialized medical care for chronic disease treatment, investing in medical equipment, infrastructure development, human resources, and research programmes, providing financial support for specialist medical training and supporting research relevant to chronic disease care”.
According to her, in as much as those core pillars remain the focus of the GMTF, ensuring direct beneficiaries under the fund receive the right
medication without any delays is also a priority.
Madam Darko-Opoku says this is the reason partnership with trusted pharmaceutical companies like Pfizer is crucial.
“The collaboration reflects GMTF’s goal to ensure that no Ghanaian is left behind due to cost, geography, or limited access to essential therapies. This marks a promising start to a long-term partnership between the Trust Fund and Pfizer, as we work together towards a Ghana where everyone can receive world class care when they need it most,” she noted.
The Pfizer delegation, led by Vice President, Access and Accord Lead, Abdelali BESRI, is ready for such partnership.
According to her, this is in tandem with steps they are taking to help enable greater access to healthcare across the world. She noted through the Accord, Pfizer is offering the full portfolio of medicines and vaccines for which it has global rights on a not-for-profit basis to people living in some lower income countries around the world.
