MP for Asawase Honourable Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak deserves a national award for fighting against criminality, General Secretary for the NDC Johnson Asiedu Nketsia has said.
His comment comes after section of Ghanaians condemned the lawmakers for their actions on Parliament on Thursday morning where election of a speaker resulted in a pandemonium.
The Member of Parliament for Asawase had led a serious revolt against an act that almost disrupted proceedings in the august house.
Speaking at media conference at the party’s office on Friday, Mr Asiedu Nketsia defended the MP for “preventing wrong doing”.
“Hon. Muntaka should be given a National Award,” he said.
“It is wrong to kill, but when you see someone going to throw a bomb into Akosombo and you kill him, it is never a crime.
“When you talk about disruptive conduct it does not include the conduct that is intended to prevent wrong doing, so, Muntaka acted well. We should award him a national prize,” he added.
According to Asiedu Nketiah, the actions of these MPs on Thursday were necessitated by the manoeuvrings of the NPP side in Parliament to subvert the Constitution and rig the election of Speaker of Parliament.
“So that is why I called those who were involved in that activity gallant MPs. He (Muntaka Mubarak) stood up in defence of democracy and our Constitution,” he added.
Mr Nketia’s call for a national award for Muntaka is in particular reference to the role he played in preventing Carlos Ahenkorah’s attempt at disrupting the collation process of the Speakership election.
The Asawase MP Muntaka along with others was seen running after and apprehending Mr Ahenkorah.
The Chip Whip for the NDC has however grabbed an overwhelming praises among the party as his action prevented what could have resulted in the rerun of the election.
