The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has officially directed the Committee on Health to launch a high-level inquiry into the systemic failures resulting in another “needless death” within the nation’s healthcare system.
The directive follows a series of distressing report of the death of a gentleman identified as Charles Amisah, a victim of a hit and run incident who unfortunately passed on at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
Addressing the House, Speaker Bagbin emphasised that Parliament will no longer permit preventable fatalities to be treated as routine occurrences.
He tasked the Committee to scrutinize submissions from the Ministry, hospital authorities, and all relevant stakeholders to uncover the specific circumstances surrounding the latest tragedy.
”We must take control,” the Speaker declared. “We need to inquire further into this matter and, crucially, we must hold people accountable.”
Moving beyond mere investigation, the Speaker signaled a major shift toward legislative intervention. He urged the House to prioritize the passage of a dedicated Emergency Care Law.
This proposed legislation aims to close persistent gaps in emergency medical response and establish a clear framework for institutional accountability.
While acknowledging the grueling conditions and resource constraints faced by frontline health personnel, the Speaker maintained that systemic negligence can no longer be ignored. He assured the public that this inquiry would not be a mere formality but would lead to concrete outcomes and policy shifts.
The Committee on Health is expected to commence its probe immediately, with a mandate to report its findings and recommendations back to the plenary for further action.
