Ghana’s Sports and Recreation Minister, Hon. Kofi Adams paid a courtesy call on the National Chief Imam, His Eminence Sheikh Usman Nuhu Sharubutu at his residence in Accra on Friday, September 12.
The Member of Parliament for the Buem constituency paid homage to the Islamic spiritual leader to strengthen the government’s relationship as well as seek spiritual guidance in the Ministry’s sporting endeavours. Honourable Kofi Adams hailed Sheikh Sharubutu for his unflinching support and consistent prayers for the various national teams and other athletes.
Accompanied by the Minister were Madam Wilhemina Asamoah, the Ministry’s first female Chief Director, along with senior technical directors.
The minister highlighted the importance of faith and collective prayers in nurturing peace and excellence in Ghanaian sports.
“Your Excellency, Your Eminence, we acknowledge and value your role as a beacon of peace and unity in our nation. Your teachings and prayers continually inspire Ghanaians to embrace harmony, which is vital for our national progress,” Kofi Adams said.
During the meeting, Mr. Kofi Adams highlighted the need to institute a cup competition that will honour the status of the national chief Imam. In the coming months, a meeting will be held between the Ministry and the office of the chief Imam to bring the tournament into fruition.
As part of the visit, assorted items worth thousands of Ghana cedis plus undisclosed amount of cash were donated to the Chief Imam in support of the upcoming Maulid-Nabi.
The Sports Minister prior to the visit played an important role in Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers where the Black Stars brightened their chances with a 1-0 win over Mali at the Accra Sports Stadium on September 8.
