The 2024 running mate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang has underscored the importance of securing a majority of NDC MPs in Parliament to support the party’s presidential candidate, John Mahama.
According to her, securing a majority in parliament is essential for the successful implementation of flagship policies, including the proposed 24-hour economy.
Speaking at a program organized by the NDC Proforum in Cape Coast during her ongoing campaign tour, Prof. Opoku Agyemang expressed concerns with the current hung Parliament.
She bemoaned the ruling NPP’s tendency to take advantage of its slim majority to push through legislation, citing the contentious e-levy bill.
“I feel sad for the current hung parliament. The majority are always looking for opportunities to pass government business whenever they realize a member of the minority is absent. It is for this reason that a member of the majority side who was on a sick bed was carried in an ambulance to parliament to vote just to pass the e-levy bill into law. Did you see that?” she asked the audience.
Prof. Opoku Agyemang indicated that achieving a majority of NDC MPs was vital for Mahama’s vision, warning that a lack of support could jeopardize the implementation of his policies.
She urged voters to make informed choices in the December elections.
The first female vice-presidential candidate of a major political party in the country also promised to empower women through specific initiatives.
“We are committed to establishing a Women’s Development Bank aimed at empowering approximately one million women, offering these loans without collateral and at no interest,” she announced.
On Monday, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang kicked off the second phase of her campaign tour in the Central Region, following the completion of her initial visit last week.
